What I don’t understand is why everyone is mad at Kylie Jenner she’s being herself and I’m glad she won’t let anyone tell her she can’t do something. Cornrows aren’t a big deal it’s her hair she can do what she wants and how can you ban a whole race from wearing a hairstyle it doesn’t make sense no one should be held down by society

this just got me so mad and i’m not a social justice blogger but i have to answer this…imma try to be civil about this answer and it might get long cause i’m real tired of explaining this to everyone.

let me tell you a story. when i was about 7 i went to a summer camp in a white ass neighborhood. a summer camp with a pool. and being a black child with extremely kinky curly 4a hair, my mom put my hair in cornrows because going in the pool without a protective style would be extremely damaging to my hair and make it tougher to manage than it already was. so i went to camp with cornrows, and the second the counselor saw me she called my mother and told her i had to go home because cornrows weren’t permitted in that camp. now i didn’t know what the fuck was going on, all i knew was that there was something wrong with my hair and that my mom pulled me out of that camp and put me in another one.

now fast forward to now, where i’m sure there are still little girls getting kicked out of that camp for wearing cornrows. and imagine being a little girl sent home for wearing cornrows but then seeing on TV that cornrows are the new trend, or reading a magazine saying cornrows are the hot new style. the only difference between you and these white people wearing cornrows is the color of your skin. so what’s wrong with you wearing cornrows? it’s that you’re black. and black is wrong. and that’s what you learn as a little girl, you’re already learning that you’re flawed, lesser than all because of something you can’t change.

the thing with appropriation is that you’re taking a hairstyle that originated from africa, that originated from african people, a hairstyle that so many black people have to use to keep their hair manageable and you’re making it APPROPRIATE. but don’t get the wording fucked up, cause you’re not making it appropriate for us. because still, so many BLACK people are scrutinized and judged for these hairstyles. so many children are getting sent home from school, getting bullied in school for this hairstyle. so many adults are getting denied jobs because of this hairstyle. so when white people take this thing WE created that even WE cannot fucking wear, yes it’s offensive. when it’s seen as a trend in various magazines and websites yet WE are still being judged for it yes it’s offensive. WE were made to be uncomfortable with this hairstyle so, no, YOU people cannot take this from us and turn it around and make it something good only when you can wear it.

so yes, kylie jenner IS a little bitch ass and i don’t give a flying fuck if she wants to wear cornrows. if a whole group of people is offended by you wearing a hairstyle, the least you could do is take it out. if someone is just trying to educate you on what you did wrong, the least you could do is apologize and stop fucking appropriating. if our people are getting shot down in the street and killed, we’re all hurting and you can help ease our pain in the slightest bit by simply taking out a damn hairstyle, why the fuck won’t you? if a WHOLE group of POC is mad because you TOOK something from us, something we can’t even use ourselves, after we’ve already been stripped of HALF our fucking culture because HALF of us don’t even know where the fuck we come from, the least you could do is just take some fucking braids out.

i could give a rats ass if “no one should be held down by society”. because i am. my people are. and until i can say that that’s no longer true, i WILL continue to be angry about people stealing one of the few thing i can say is mine, and that’s my fucking culture.

for everyone who’s acting like they haven’t seen this post plus hundreds more who are asking about why justin wearing dreads is racist. pay fucking attention. we’re tired of explaining it. we’re not explaining it anymore.
