Home – A headcanon about where they’re from
WOW man I have so many but I’m gonna stick to my fave
Lavender’s crew were good. They were pirates, of course, and so sometimes ignored social niceties, but that did not immediately make them bad.
What made them bad was what they did. Not the stealing, really, that was a necessity and they only stole from those who could afford a loss. No, Lavender’s view of ‘bad’ was really what was inconvenient for her. And her crew did that a lot. Be it Skylan’s constant whining about how much she had to work on the ship, or Monica’s and Arian’s incessant, sometimes unbearable arguments over the simplest of things, or that stupid monkey that the Captain still regretted allowing her swabbie to keep, as it always got the young crew member into unneeded trouble. (But little Alice was young, and so could still use ‘the face’ to get what she wanted.)
So what did she do to discipline them?
Barnacle duty.
Their ship was built for both sea and air, and never really liked to dock anywhere, let alone be drawn up onto land. The main engines, two gigantic cylinders near the rear of the ship, also didn’t allow for the ship to lean on her side when beached without damage to the engines themselves. So how did they clean the barnacles that inevitably found their way onto the boat?
It was a lot simpler than what one might imagine. Think of how exposed the ship was once in the air, how easily the invading seas creatures could just be scraped off without any trouble. the problem was how to reach them, and this answer was also very simple.
It came in the form of a small, wooden plank, fashioned to resemble a swing. The ‘bad’ crew member was lowered down and perched over the edge of the ship, miles high from the surface of the land (or sea) and began scraping Hydra’s underbelly to keep her healthy. The work was never dangerous, as Lav always had a Glider on hand to catch any falling objects (or people) so that there was no real danger of falling. But it was both mentally and physically exhausting enough to get her crew’s attention.
For a while, at least.
And then it would start again, but at least it kept the ship clean.
