reasons why ace/aro representation is really fucking important in the media

musings-of-a-monster:

dantiloquent:

  • aro/ace kids getting into relationships in high school just so they can say they’re in a relationship and feel “normal”
  • aro/ace people doubting themselves because they don’t feel attraction
  • aro/ace spectrum people doubting themselves because they do feel attraction, just not all the time/not the “right” kind
  • sherlock is said to be asexual for a purpose, not because he doesn’t have a sex drive, but because it’s suppressed to do his work.”
  • people thinking sexual attraction and sex drive are the same thing
  • not only do people think asexuality is to do with plants, some think asexuality refers to sea horses. SEA HORSES.
  • the lack of a dictionary definition means there’s no proof for aro/ace people to use to back themselves up
  • “you just haven’t met The One yet”
  • films, tv shows and books turning what could be a great platonic relationship into an unnecessary, bland romantic relationship
  • people using aromanticism/asexuality as an angst trope
  • asexuals and aromantics can be in denial about their sexual/romantic orientation for months
  • canon asexual characters are the stone cold villains and the few asexual celebrities out there have their asexuality ignored and erased
  • not a day goes by when i don’t doubt myself or my sexuality
  • having no well-known asexuals/aromantics makes it really fucking lonely

^Yes, this, also

  • asexuals and aromantics (including, of course, those on the spectrum(s) ) can be in denial about their orientation(s) for years
  • Aros/aces will try to “fix” themselves because “how do you know if you’ve never tried it?”
  • What few aro/ace characters their are might “grow up” or (gag) “get in touch with their humanity” and magically metamorphose into allos which is a toxic message to send aros/aces
