The Indigenous language Ryan DeCaire is fighting to save isn’t one he
spoke regularly — or fluently — while growing up on Wahta Mohawk
territory.
“People [with Mohawk ancestry] are saying words like, ‘hello’,
‘goodbye’, 1,2,3’ but is that all there is?,” DeCaire asked himself.
The questions spurred him to realize that the only people who spoke
fluent Mohawk were elders in the community and that time is running out
to preserve the language.
“If we don’t do something about that, we’re probably going to witness [the language’s] death in my own lifetime.”
DeCaire is now an assistant professor at the University of Toronto’s
Centre for Indigenous Studies. The faculty focuses on teaching
Indigenous history, language and customs to students.
Its Ciimaa/Kahuwe’ya/Qajaq language program teaches the Mohawk,
Anishinaabemowin, Oneida and Inuktitut languages, which teachers and
linguists said will die out if they are not passed on to the next
generation.
“It’s a part of what it means to be Canadian, that we have a relationship to Indigenous people.”
Mohawk, an Iroquoian language spoken in Ontario, Quebec and parts of
New York state, is considered threatened and is estimated to be spoken
by 3,500 people; a number that DeCaire disputes. He believes those who
are proficient and experienced in speaking Mohawk as their first
language hovers around only 1,000 people.
DeCaire, who teaches a class of 12 people in Mohawk language studies,
is dedicated to learning his ancestral language from elders over “many
cups of tea and games of solitaire.”
He also enrolled in a two-year immersion program at Six Nations of
the Grand River reserve near Brantford, learning directly from speakers
whose first language is Mohawk.
“You have to set up your life in a way that you can constantly be
around a language and constantly be learning it,” DeCaire said.
The amount of lesbians who know that they’re lesbians from a young age versus the amount of gay men who know that they’re gay from a young age shows a staggering difference in that most lesbians take way longer to realize that they’re gay.
Girls are told that dating men is supposed to be hard and essentially unfulfilling. That it’s normal to expend emotional and sexual labor without receiving anything or feeling anything in return. Girls are told that their attraction to men and relationships with men should be difficult and sometimes feel forced because men are so emotionally lacking or otherwise “hypermasculine”.
Realizing that you don’t like men because you’re gay versus just feeling emotionally exhausted or unable/unsure of how to “please” men is part of the reason why compulsory heterosexuality is so damaging. It forces many girls to continue to date men and to keep trying to feel attraction to them long after they’ve realized that there’s nothing there—particularly blaming themselves for the reasons why relationships with men don’t work out instead of thinking it’s an indicator of being gay, which most (though of course not all) gay men are able to recognize as an initial indicator early on.

This happens in Venezuela. It looks like nobody knows how is our crisis, because I’ve talked with a lot of people (Americans, French, Canadian and even Mexican people) who really don’t know what is happening.

Since 2014, our crisis is worse with the health zone. There’s no too many medicines, and a lot of operations and treatments are delayed for this same reason.
The hospitals don’t have spaces, litters or beds for the patients.
If you go to a farmacy, there’s no medicine.
A lot of hospitals are in a terrible state.
Supplies that were lacking in public hospitals included sterile gloves and gauze, antiseptics, alcohol for medical use, scalpels, needles, catheters, intravenous solutions, nebulizers and surgical sutures. It was even common to lack basic cleaning supplies (such as bleach), which are essential to ensure a sterile environment in hospitals. Unhealthy conditions have led to in-hospital infections that could have been prevented.
And this is only talking about the health zone.
If we talk about the food shortage and the hyper inflation…
We must do LOOOOOONG lines for hours for buy the basic food. Like flour, sugar, rice, pasta, meat, chicken….

Y’all this shortage of necessities shit had been going on in Venezuela for at least a decade. I have never been able to help because I don’t know what charities are allowed in or out of Venezuela and I don’t trust the people who run those charities to tell the truth.
Please – someone IN Venezuela. Give me a name. A valid website. Something. I will do my damnedest to make something happen, even if it’s just a few families getting fed a few days.

This is the first time I see a post on this site about my country and it breakes my heart… Because I want to give you names of charities so you can actually help us but I know people that tried to donate meds and food but our fucking goverment blocked that help. They refuse to accept aid. They are so fucking sick of power that just don’t care about us.
The only way we have to fight this crisis is through social media, we use twitter to find meds and food and we came up with a few apps like Donamed or Akiztá to help us find what we need.
For the people out there that want to help, like I said… it’s hard to tell you how you could do that because there’s no warranty that we’ll get the help. Still, I won’t let them win so I did my research and I found a few websites that I think you guys can trust and can donate to.

I’m terrified of this culture I see on tumblr which dictates that if a person does something wrong, or makes a mistake, or displays a moment of ignorance they are trash and worthless and deserve to be torn to shreds. A human being does not stop being a human being because they said something stupid. The idea that we should all aspire to a very specific sense of social and ideological purity or we deserve to die is dictatorial and frankly frightening.
