According to secret CIA assessment, Russia interfered with the election for Trump
According to the Washington Post, a secret CIA assessment found Russia made efforts to sway the the 2016 presidential election in Donald Trump’s favor. In a “closed-door briefing” detailed by the Post, agency officials told senators Russia aimed to put Trump in the White House. Here’s what the agency found.
Update: Trump denies Russia hack, John McCain urges “the facts are there”
- Donald Trump dismissed CIA reports that Russian hackers likely influenced the Nov. 8 election as “ridiculous.”
- “I think it’s just another excuse,” he told Fox News. “I don’t believe it. They have no idea if it’s Russia or China or somebody. It could be somebody sitting in a bed someplace.”
- U.S. Senator John McCain wasn’t as dismissive. “The facts are there. Whether [the Russian government] intended to interfere to the degree that they were trying to elect a certain candidate, I think that’s a subject of investigation. But facts are stubborn things. They did hack into this campaign.”
- On Sunday, four high-profile U.S. Senators from both political parties issued a joint statement on the recent intelligence findings.
- Democrats Chuck Schumer and Jack Reed, along with Republicans John McCain and Lindsey Graham, urged further investigation into the matter.
- They said the interference into the election “should alarm every American.” “This cannot become a partisan issue,” the statement said. “The stakes are too high for our country.” Read more
