Home – A headcanon about where they’re from

WOW man I have so many but I’m gonna stick to my fave

Lavender’s crew were good. They were pirates, of course, and so sometimes  ignored social niceties, but that did not immediately make them bad.

What made them bad was what they did. Not the stealing, really, that was a necessity and they only stole from those who could afford a loss. No, Lavender’s view of ‘bad’ was really what was inconvenient for her. And her crew did that a lot. Be it Skylan’s constant whining about how much she had to work on the ship, or Monica’s and Arian’s incessant, sometimes unbearable arguments over the simplest of things, or that stupid monkey that the Captain still regretted allowing her swabbie to keep, as it always got the young crew member into unneeded trouble. (But little Alice was young, and so could still use ‘the face’ to get what she wanted.)

So what did she do to discipline them?

Barnacle duty.

Their ship was built for both sea and air, and never really liked to dock anywhere, let alone be drawn up onto land. The main engines, two gigantic cylinders near the rear of the ship, also didn’t allow for the ship to lean on her side when beached without damage to the engines themselves. So how did they clean the barnacles that inevitably found their way onto the boat?

It was a lot simpler than what one might imagine. Think of how exposed the ship was once in the air, how easily the invading seas creatures could just be scraped off without any trouble. the problem was how to reach them, and this answer was also very simple.

It came in the form of a small, wooden plank, fashioned to resemble a swing. The ‘bad’ crew member was lowered down and perched over the edge of the ship, miles high from the surface of the land (or sea) and began scraping Hydra’s underbelly to keep her healthy. The work was never dangerous, as Lav always had a Glider on hand to catch any falling objects (or people) so that there was no real danger of falling. But it was both mentally and physically exhausting enough to get her crew’s attention.

For a while, at least.

And then it would start again, but at least it kept the ship clean.

For Lavender! Snapshot and Ouch!

Ouch – A regret

((i dont think any new people will know what im talking about right now, as this was a lONG time ago))

It was something that used to keep her up at night. She’d sit in the quiet, pressing, sometimes suffocating darkness for a while, staring at nothing, listening to the quiet snores of her wolf companions, sorting the thoughts and feelings in her mind, always, always coming back to that one memory that never really went away. It was better now, for she used to be able to see the image if she closed her eyes, but it had still taken up permanent residence in the very back of her mind, draining her as time went on and she still hadn’t addressed it. She probably never will.

It was such a stupid thing to do.

Why did she do it?

She still hasn’t forgiven herself, not even now.

This was when she would roll onto her side and see the bedside stand. It held her bangles, her ring, her earrings, everything she didn’t sleep with.

And a knife, gold and shimmering and given to her by someone as soulless as they looked, with her haunting absent eyes. A knife that used to be red with the blood of the one person who trusted her since she had left her home universe. It was Lavender’s fault, really, but it still didn’t seem like anything other than a dream– no, nightmare, to her.

It was such a stupid thing to do.

Snapshot – What they’re currently doing

The wind roared through the ragged, windswept area. Stubborn, purple plants grew indignantly, leaning away from the wind and rippling like the sea as the gusts shook them to their roots. But they’d been living on these hills for who-knows-how-long, and they had adapted.

The woman standing on the side of one of these hills was not so ready to confront the wind, and was shaking as it seemed to go right through everything she wore (which, in honesty, wasn’t much to begin with).

But she was determined to reach the top of this hill, and moved forward with a new-found determination. ‘If the stupid plants can survive this, so can I.’ She climbed through the tangling leaves and stems and emerged at the peak. A huge, dominant stone wall barred her way, and she shifted the backpack slung over her shoulder in what was a mixture of relief and anxiety.

The craggy mountains were visible in the distance, across the river, and the castle on top of that helped make the area even more looming and intimidating. She smelled fish cooking, and the faint trace of magic energy that was more of a tingling in her nose than a real smell, and knew at last that she was home.

She just hoped she’d be welcomed again, or if these inhabitants had, too, adapted.

DEAR RESEARCHERS OF TUMBLR

You know what’s awesome?  Research.  You know what’s not awesome?  Not being able to get access to research because it’s stuck behind a paywall and you don’t belong to an institution/your institution doesn’t subscribe to that particular journal.

FEAR NOT.

Here is a list of free, open access materials on a variety of subjects.  Feel free to add if you like!

GO FORTH AND LEARN SHIT, MY FRIENDS.

Directory of Open Access Journals– A compendium of over 9000 journals from 133 countries, multilingual and multidisciplinary.

Directory of Open Access Books– Like the above, but for ebooks.  Also multidisciplinary.

Ubiquity Press– Journals covering archaeology, comics scholarship, museum studies, psychology, history, international development, and more.  Also publishes open access ebooks on a wide variety of subjects.

Europeana–  Digital library about the history and culture of Europe.

Digital Public Library of America– American history, culture, economics, SO MUCH AMERICA.

Internet Archive– In addition to books, they have music and videos, too.  Free!  And legal!  They also have the Wayback Machine, which lets you see webpages as they looked at a particular time.

College and Research Libraries– Library science and information studies.  Because that’s what I do.

Library of Congress Digital Collections– American history and culture, historic newspapers, sound recordings, photographs, and a ton of other neat stuff.

LSE Digital Library– London history, women’s history.

Wiley Open Access– Science things!  Neurology, medicine, chemistry, ecology, engineering, food science, biology, psychology, veterinary medicine.

SpringerOpen–  Mainly STEM journals, looooong list.

Elsevier Open Access–  Elsevier’s kind of the devil but you might as well take advantage of this.  Mainly STEM, also a linguistics journal and a medical journal in Spanish.

Also, remember — there is a wide world of researchers out there, most of whom don’t give two figs about paywalls. Let people know what you’re having trouble accessing, and you’d be surprised how quickly a copy will find its way to your inbox. And if you do belong to an institution with a library, check out their interlibrary loan system, which is a more official way of getting things from behind a paywall at no cost to you.

Bolded. Let me know if there’s an article you want and I’ll see if I have access to it.

Are you afraid of using blend modes in photoshop? Are you overwhelmed by the choices?

Here are some simple charts showing the effects of photoshop layer Blend Modes (not to be confused with filters) using saturated colors. The columns of colors are on top of the rows of colors. These are the results that I get when I flip through the blend modes. If you use dark colors over light or light colors over dark, you will have different effects. Do not be afraid to experiment with blend modes! They can be quite fun! And wow, do they give you awesome color palettes…

  • MAC shortcut – Click on move tool, shift (+) or shift (-)
  • PC Shortcut –  Click blend mode box, then use ↑ and ↓ arrows

This is a brief overview. If you want super in-depth explanation about blend modes and how you can hone in on how to get the effects that you want, click here.
